Dallas Chamber Symphony Presents Schwanter, Saint-Saëns, and Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Jr., February 25th

DALLAS, TX – As the Dallas Chamber Symphony continues its sophomore season, the orchestra serves up another captivating live-to-film performance – this time it presents the classic comedy, Sherlock Jr., starring Buster Keaton. Widely regarded as one of the funniest silent films ever made, the film is brought to new life by Craig Marks, a composer of Iron Chef America fame. A graduate of UCLA and acknowledged as a contender for the Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Original theme Music in 2012, Marks is a rising talent who has apprenticed with Hans Zimmer, and written for feature films, network and cable television, and classical ensembles.

In this exciting concert that also features Saint- Saëns’ popular Carnival of the Animals — complete with dance. Powerful and evocative Distant Runes & Incantations by Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Joseph Schwantner rounds out the program.

Carnival of the Animals will include choreographed dance elements to select movements, as it did at its premiere in 1886. Distant Runes and Incantations is cinematic in sound, as it experiments with amplified piano.

Buster Keaton’s legendary 1924 silent comedy Sherlock, Jr. is both a grand work of ultra-physical slapstick and a remarkably complex leap forward in the special effects and formal innovation available to filmmakers. Keaton plays a lovelorn film projectionist who dozes off and manages to actually project himself into a movie and solve a mystery involving his dastardly romantic rival—an act of fantasy that has real-world consequences when finally he leaves the film within the film.

The performance will be held on Tuesday, February 25th, 2014 at Dallas City Performance Hall (2520 Flora Street, Dallas, Texas 75201). It will begin at 8:00 p.m. Individual tickets are available for $19-$44 each, $12 for students.
